“what?” Eden’s gaze skittered from the clusters of people mulling about in the yard to the packed drive back to the handsome cowboy in the seat next to her.

Ryder’s mouth quirked on one side. But the blasted man didn’t even offer a hint as to what was going on.

She leaned forward and peered out the windshield to study the faces. Quickly made out all the program cowboys and Myron. One of Sophie’s gymnastic friends and her mom. A sprinkling of neighbors. Skye and Luke. And was that…? Yes, Micah Konrad, out of uniform.

Eden’s jaw dropped. As if in slow motion, she turned to face the cowboy. “What’s going on?”

He maneuvered the truck into a vacant spot and shut off the engine. His beautiful baby blues connected with hers. A grin tugged at his lips, almost hidden by his beard. “A little get together.”

“A little get together…” she echoed, her gaze slinging back to the crowd in the yard.

“Hang on. Let me help you get down.” He slid out of the driver’s seat and jogged around the back of the truck.

This time she obeyed. Waited for him to open her door and hold out a hand. “Thanks.”

When she reached the ground, his eyes—full of sparkle and hope and maybe a hint of promise?—held her in place as much as his hands circling hers. “You’re looking mighty pretty tonight, Eden.”

She glanced down. Could barely see the tips of her freshly painted-red toenails peeking out of her sandals. After trying on practically every maternity shirt in her dresser, she’d decided on a loose-fitting sundress tonight. Not that she thought of herself as a raving beauty, by any means, but this blooming baby made her feel as big as the side of the weathered barn back at home. About as rough some days too.

His words and sentiment were nice, but, really, who was he trying to fool? She chuckled to mask her insecurity. “I’m not sure my clothes will last this pregnancy. I think I’ve already stretched them all out to the max.” And she couldn’t afford to buy more. Certainly wouldn’t ask Skye, either, especially since her friends had insisted on buying her entire maternity wardrobe. Claimed that they would’ve had to buy clothes for Skye and that pregnancy and new clothes were a package deal. She glanced down again, but all she could see was belly this time. A sigh escaped. How much bigger could her belly get?

He nudged her chin up with his thumb until she lifted her lashes and met his gaze. “Clothes aren’t what make you beautiful, honey. Your beauty literally radiates from the inside out. From that huge heart of yours.” His expressive blue eyes never wavered from her face, roaming from her forehead to her mouth, glittering with appreciation. Adoration. As if she was the most gorgeous woman on the planet. Then his hands framed the sides of her stomach. “And this little one is living proof.”

Swallowing, she blinked back tears and allowed his praise to soak deep.
